Santos Road Glass

Architect: Luis Trevino Archtiects
Location: Wandsworth, London
Completion: 2004

A series of structural glass features throughout the building form key elements of the design in the refurbishment of this period property in South London.

Foremost of these is a two storey glass staircase which was added to the top floors of this period property in Wandsworth. Discreet connections and minimal handrails added to the transparency of the overall element and, combined with a prismatic skylight above and behind the top flight, allowed light to flow down into the heart of the building.

At the top floor, a one-way glass wall was used to form a shower room that allowed uninterrupted views of the garden over the stair and through the back of the prism while maintaining privacy.

A single storey extension at ground floor level with load bearing glass walls and a structural glass roof allows huge amounts of light into the kitchen, while also drawing attention to key architectural elements of the existing building.

In addition to the glass work, the project also involved extensive removal of ground floor walls to form an almost completely open plan layout. Removal of floor sections at upper levels allows for generous volumes and airy spaces to complete the transformation from a tired, dark terrace to a superbly designed contemporary home.
