Towner Gallery

Architect: Rick Mather Architects
Location: Eastbourne, UK
Completion: 2009

This major new public building on England's south coast provides a home to an existing art collection, enormous exhibition and conference spaces, education spaces, specialist loading areas, community rooms, cafe spaces and a shop.

Structurally, it incorporates internal and external fair faced concrete, exposed concrete beams with spans of up to 18m, portalised concrete frames, bladed metal staircases and projecting wide wings. All of this while linking into and under the Grade II* listed Congress Theatre without impacting its fabric. In addition to this, the other side of the site abuts Devonshire Park, which hosted the pre-Wimbledon, Queen's Tennis Tournament during construction and could not be affected by the building works.
