Orchard Cottage

Architect: Drawn Studio
Location: Freckleton, Lancashire
Completion: 2013

This new build house was formed in Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in order to speed up construction and generate an internal structural surface that required no additional finishes. Both of these were part of a successful cost saving drive, however, the geometry of the space did not lend itself naturally to using CLT as a structure so it needed to be carefully designed with close attention to the connection details in order to achieve the desired spaces and habitable roof volumes.

The building also features a cantilevering chimney stack support, walls suspended from upper floors, floating corners and pop out window seats - all of which resulted in a fantastic finished product, once the structure to accommodate them could be resolved.
