Woodborough Road

Architect: Fraher Architects
Location: Richmond, London
Completion: 2013

The bay window to the rear of this building in south London was completely re-built to accommodate a fully glazed, completely openable walls. In order to accommodate this, a new steel frame was incorporated into the rear wall to reinforce the opening. Cranked steel beams cantilever out from the new frame following the profile of the bay, with the glazed doors and walls suspended from this. The resulting "floating bay" enables the client to feel as though they are sitting outside in the garden from the comfort of the indoors.

In addition to this feature, internal walls and openings were re-arranged to form a new, dynamic living space with large clear walls to accommodate the client's art collection.
